Incorporated: 1756
Origin: Settled as early as 1736 as Great Falls or Lunenburg, this town was not granted by New Hampshire until 1752, when it was named Bellowstown. Colonel Benjamin Bellows, for whom Bellows Falls, Vermont, was named, built a large fort at Walpole for defense against Indian attack. In 1761 the grant was renewed, and the town was renamed Walpole, in honor of Sir Robert Walpole, first Prime Minister of England.
Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 1,245 residents in 1790
Population Trends: Walpole's population grew slowly over the last five decades, staying well below the statewide average rate. Decennial growth rates ranged from a one percent increase between 1970-1980 to a 12 percent increase between 1990-2000. Over fifty years, Walpole's population increased by a total of 1,058 residents, going from 2,536 in 1950 to 3,594 residents in 2000. The 2003 Census estimate for Walpole was 3,674 residents, which ranked 98th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
Population Density, 2003: 101.5 persons per square mile of land area. Walpole contains 35.7 square miles of land area and 1.0 square miles of inland water area.
